Officer Goodwin stares at me in disbelief. He rifles through his paperwork before whispering to the cop next to him. They exchange a few heated looks before turning back to look at me. “Mr. Valenti, do you realize how this sounds?”

Thirty minutes ago I proposed to Sloane and presented her with an engagement ring that brought a tear to her eye. It actually warmed my heart a little bit to see her slip it on her finger and laugh. Fifteen minutes ago I meandered over to the boardroom to sit for my line of questioning with the police. They asked what I was doing the night of Daniel’s murder. When I told them I was with Sloane, they made a checkmark on their legal pads.

They had prepared for the interview and were under the impression that they knew how it was going to end. They didn’t expect me to flip everything on its head.

I was asked about the email exchange between Daniel and Sloane. I did my best to act shocked by the news, but true shock hit when they allowed me to see the photos. Daniel made her do some truly disturbing shit. In the confines of a committed, loving relationship, these pictures would be erotic. But I know what he was threatening to do if she didn’t perform for him and it made me sick to my stomach to look at the photos.

That’s when I told the cops that we were engaged. It had led to several tense, quiet moments.

“How what sounds?” I ask innocently.

Goodwin sighs heavily and I can see a little furrow in his brow that says he’s not happy. “How getting engaged to the only suspect in this case sounds,” he explains. “How your family, the Valenti family, getting involved with a woman that potentially murdered one of Manhattan’s finest architects sounds?” The emphasis he puts on the last word almost makes me think I should be concerned.

But I haven’t been bullied since I was eight years old. My brothers came to my aid then and we’ve stood together since. The Valenti family name might be associated with the scum of the earth to people like Officer Goodwin, but we’re a hell of a lot stronger together than we are separated. “Sir, I’m not sure I know what you’re talking about.”

The officer slides his hand across the desk and papers go flying. Up close, the rage on his face takes the form of snarling and near-foaming at the mouth. “She did it, didn’t she?” Goodwin accuses. “Just fucking admit it.”

I check my watch as if bored with the conversation. Quite frankly, there’s nothing to talk about here. Edward’s lunatic rants and raves can accuse me of whatever he wants, but he has no proof. “I think I’d like to have my lawyer present if you’re going to start accusing my fiancé of homicide.”
